Job Description
As a Phsyician Radilogy-Diagnostic you will: Works under the limited supervision of the Chief, Department of Radiology, and Chief, Diagnostic Radiology Service, Womack Army Medical Center (WAMC) who enforces and sets objectives. Incumbent performs assigned work with considerable independence in accordance with Army and hospital regulations, policies, and procedures. Incumbent exercises independent judgment in the medical treatment and management of patients (inpatient/outpatient) encountering the full range of conditions in radiology, with particular expertise in advanced general diagnostic radiology procedures, to include MRI, CT, Mammography, MRA, and Ultrasound. Provides assistance to house staff and physician assistant students and other medical trainees. Supervisory administrative direction concerning relevant education programs comes from the Chief, Diagnostic Radiology. Work is reviewed, through the Quality Improvement Program, and using peer reviews, for compliance with policies, and effectiveness of efforts. MAJOR DUTIES As a board-certified radiologist, provides the full scope of advanced diagnostic radiology services, including the most difficult and complex in nature, for the Department of Radiology, WAMC. Duties include the full range of Diagnostic Radiology, including but not limited to Plain Film Radiography, Computed Radiography (CR), Fluoroscopy, Neuroradiology, Ultrasonography (US), Mammography, Angiography, Arthrography, Interventional Radiology, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA), and Computerized Tomography (CT), in accordance with established principles, practices and ethics of both the medical profession and the American College of Radiology. Incumbent provides expertise and consultation in the subspecialty field of Radiology at WAMC and, as needed, in support of the outlying primary care medical clinics. Support for the outlying primary care medical clinics is performed utilizing the DIN-PACS system or Teleradiology services. Exercises independent judgment in the treatment and management of patients with the full range of conditions encountered in radiology and provides assistance to house staff and medical trainees. Provides training to educate radiology technologists and students. Provision of Direct Patient Care/Technical Requirements: - Incumbent has responsibility within the department when patients are present for examination, including overall supervision of critically ill patients and provision for emergency treatment and resuscitative measures when necessary. - Obtains history for general radiographic diagnoses, carrying out appropriate physical examination, obtaining indicated laboratory tests results, and assessing severity of illness. Provides full formal counseling with patients (inpatient and outpatient), thoroughly documenting all aspects of the encounter in the medical treatment record. Provides follow-up as indicated. Contacts patients and referring clinicians to provide results of examinations and consultations when appropriate. Oversees the radiographic examination, ensuring the correct radiographic procedures are conducted, relating the symptom(s) to the pain and illness of the patient. - Utilizes specialty unique imaging technology in the diagnostic evaluation and when appropriate treatment of patients with complex problems (multi-organ system dysfunction or failure) using special procedures such as CT, MRI, Mammography, Ultrasound, Angiography, and Interventional techniques. - Provides consultation, reporting the radiologic diagnostic examination, delivering interpretation of the study and the diagnosis of the radiographic examination to the clinician. Reevaluates incoming studies of patients being transferred from other medical treatment facilities to determine accuracy of diagnosis. - Recommends and directs the care and treatment of the patient. Consults with the requesting physician before a procedure is done, deciding on the procedure and ensuring the minimization of the invasion of the patient. Consults with the surgeon in planning the surgical plan of approach. - Provides overall supervision of critically ill patients under diagnostic care and provides for emergency treatment and resuscitative measures when necessary. Obtains consultation, provides referral within the department and other medical elements within WAMC and the outlying primary care medical clinics, and when required by the patients condition with other staff radiologists, clinicians, residents, fellows, technologists, and nurses. Maintains daily interaction with other staff radiologists, clinicians, residents, fellows, technologists, and nurses. - Accomplishes special quality assurance studies in accordance with schedule established by the Chief, Department of Radiology. Provides advice, professional opinions, and written technical studies and professional reviews upon request by the Chief, Department of Radiology in support of the various boards and committees within WAMC involved with evaluation of patient care and treatment. May be required to attend Department or Hospital board or committee meetings in accordance with schedule established by the Chief, Department of Radiology. Submits Diagnostic Radiology Reports. These reports of diagnostic interpretations are submitted as dictation utilizing voice recognition software (on government furnished equipment), handwritten, stamped, or typed as directed in Departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) by the Chief, Department of Radiology. - Performs consultations with the requesting physicians and other staff radiologists as required. Provides technical direction for technicians and ancillary personnel in the Department of Radiology in the performance of their duties. Investigates new procedures and diagnostic techniques in radiology to improve or modify diagnostic capabilities. Academic Requirements: - Actively participates in the Teaching Program at WAMC which is directed at the staff radiologists, residents in other departments, medical students, technologists, and other WAMC staff members. - Provides instructions and education to the rotating family practice residents, physician assistant students, and special operations forces medics. Provides daily instruction to rotating individuals assigned to their section on relevant topics in radiology. Provides guidance and instruction and reviews the image quality of studies performed by military radiology (68P) students assigned to the radiology student-training program under the direction of the student training coordinator. Maintains Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for state licensure as required. Attends CME activities as appropriate to maintain a high level of expertise in the fields of diagnostic radiology and any relevant subspecialty training. - Provides didactic lectures and/or film conferences with the radiology staff radiologists, other department or WAMC physicians and medical students. Participates in and/or attends departmental conferences and in-services. Performs other duties as assigned.
