Job Description
Duties: Supervisory Nurse of an Intensive Care Unit in a regional medical center. Accountable for the 24-hour operation, personnel, bed utilization and mission requirements of the unit. As a clinical expert,provides, directs, and evaluates the delivery of specialized nursing care to high acuity level,complex, critically ill patients having numerous complicating conditions or potential life-threateninghealth problems. Monitors and assesses the fiscal budget and resource utilization makingadjustments as indicated. Responsible for the professional development, training, and evaluation ofnumerous staff members. Provides advice, assistance, counsel and instruction to nursing andresident physician personnel as required. Maintains records, reports, and schedules. Oversees unitquality improvement and education programs. Ensures compliance with standards of care, DON and MAMC policies and procedures. Collaborates with physicians and other health professionals toensure a multidisciplinary approach to cost effective, quality patient care in a managed careenvironment. Ensures maintenance of nursing records, statistical diagnostic categories, and otherdata as necessary for manpower determinations using civil technology support. 1. Directly and through subordinate supervisors, supervises professional and technical personnel inthe Section. Plan, assign, and evaluate work of subordinates. Plans and coordinates funds,personnel, and equipment needed to accomplish short and long-range mission requirements.Changes organization of work and assignment of functions to improve workflow and servicesprovided. Prepares plans to meet substantial changes in workload and justifies revisions in staffinglevels, work priorities and deadlines. Assigns work; prepares performance standards and appraisalsand reviews those prepared by subordinate supervisors. Prepares formal requests for fillingvacancies or for additional personnel/overtime to meet workload requirements. Selectssubordinates. Initiates requests for promotion, reassignment, awards and other personnel actions.Approves leave; investigates and controls use of sick leave. Receives formal grievances referred bysubordinate supervisors. Holds corrective interviews with subordinates, determines training needsand arranges necessary training. Identifies professional developmental and/or training needs ofemployees. Monitors provision of informal and formal training introducing new equipment and/orprocedures, reviewing and expanding clinical nursing knowledge, and covering aspects of individualpatient care in the orientation and development of subordinates. Recommends and/or requestsformalized training particularly in specialized areas. Finds and implements ways to better managethe ICU to include new equipment, technology, promote team concepts, etc. 2. Participates in program, policy and procedures development for the Department of Nursing,serves as a member of various committees, and participates in development of implementingdirectives required for accomplishment of an efficient, well trained nursing service staff. Responsiblefor the review, signature, and maintenance of complete records and reports related to thetreatment and care of patients or department activities and operations in accordance withregulatory and locally reestablished guidelines. 3. As a nurse specialist, provides an advanced level of specialized nursing care to high acuity level,complex, critically ill patients having numerous complicating conditions or potential life-threateninghealth problems. In the absence of a physician, independently makes decisions and implementsproper emergency measures after identifying and interpreting life-threatening conditions. Initiateslife-saving measures. These measures include, but are not limited to advanced cardiopulmonaryresuscitation; calculating dosages and mixing potent and potentially lethal drugs prior to arrival of aphysician and administering these drugs upon the physician's directives; and performing arterialpunctures for assessment of blood gases and coordinating various ventilator adjustments withRespiratory Therapy in accordance with unit policy, based on blood gas interpretations. Assists withendotracheal intubation, insertion of arterial and venous catheters and chest tubes, in addition toother critical care procedures. Provides comprehensive nursing care to the critically ill patient bycontinually observing, monitoring and assessing the patient's condition. Interprets signs andsymptoms of deterioration in condition and takes corrective action. Orders lab test and x-rays tobetter assess the patient per unit protocol. Assesses patient's response regarding cardiac output,vital signs, peripheral perfusion and level of consciousness. Performs continuous respiratoryassessments and evaluates blood gas results. Administers and monitors the use of therapeuticagents (medications) in accordance with Nursing Service's policies and procedures, publishedresources, unit operating instructions, and Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG). Uses specializedpatient equipment such as respiratory equipment, intravenous infusion pumps, various suctionapparatus, pleurovacs, cardiovascular monitors, defibrillators, invasive hemodynamic catheters,peritoneal dialysis machines, intra-aortic balloon pumps and other equipment as required by thepatient's condition. Explain to patient of performed procedure. Reassure patients of proper care andmotivate them to cooperate during the procedure. Performs other duties as assigned.
