Job Description
This position is located in a Bureau of Medicine and Surgery Military Treatment Facility (BUMED MTF) and performs professional work in the field of Family Medicine. The purpose of this position is to provide comprehensive Family Medicine medical care to a broad range of patients with both common and complex medical concerns. Care includes, but is not limited to, diagnosis, prevention, therapy, maintenance and rehabilitation for enrolled patients within the scope of clinical privileges. The incumbent will also serve as a technical authority on boards and committees, in conferences, and other activities involving the health care of the population served. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Serves as a recognized technical authority in the delivery of Family Medicine Medical care to all ages of active duty personnel, their dependents, eligible Navy Civilian employees and other eligible beneficiaries. Independently formulates full treatment plans based on sound evaluation and diagnoses consistent with current and/ or evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Coordinates with facility and community resources to provide multi-disciplinary comprehensive care to all patients, taking into account factors such as new and/or emerging procedures and techniques and the patients personal history, as well as information gained through diagnostic tests. Applies new procedures in the evaluation and treatment of complex patient cases and conducts research for the advancement of the Family Medicine program and for quality improvement to other providers and patients. Performs emergency services or crisis intervention, including life-saving emergency procedures when necessary. Promotes preventative and health maintenance care, stresses positive health behaviors and self-care through education and counseling. Encourages patients to make difficult life style changes to improve their heath and provides follow-up treatment and care to patients to ascertain compliance with therapy and response to treatment. Provides advice by telephone and/ or in person to other physicians, non-physician providers, and other professional medical staff on the care of patients with urgent, emergent, and nonurgent medical problems. 2. Serves as member of the professional medical staff and provides advisory and consultative services on various meetings, committees, conferences, and/ or boards. Participates in committees/ meetings that evaluate the care provided to patients at MTF, identifies opportunities to change the care delivered, advises on difficult or complex cases, and recommends corrective action when problems exist. Participates in Quality Assurance (QA) functions, performance improvement programs, risk management programs, and peer review programs. Makes recommendations on improvement of work methods and organizational features. Performs Other Duties Assigned.
