Job Description

MAJOR DUTIES 1. Incumbent works in collegial relationships with other credentialed providers. Administers health care services in an outpatient setting in compliance with state and federal regulations and meets professional standards, including BUMED policies, and the requirements of designated regulatory agencies. 2. Responsible for efficient and effective operation of medical service to render treatment and medical care in a primary care setting. Evaluates the wellness status of patients. Evaluates patients with acute/minor and chronic illnesses, providing compassionate, competent care and follow-up. Provides counseling to patients including illness prevention, health maintenance, restoration of health, and health protection. Makes appropriate diagnosis based on history, physical exams, and appropriate laboratory and ancillary studies, as indicated. Manages the treatment of patients through use of various therapeutic modalities. Provides follow-up care to ascertain the patients compliance to therapy and response to treatment. Prescribes approved medications and other therapeutic agents. Conducts patient histories, physical examinations, appropriate consultations, and referrals. 3. Assesses individuals and develops a care plan based on physical and psycho-social status and on the needs of the patient. Diagnoses minor/acute and chronic conditions. Takes appropriate history and completes a physical exam. Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory test, to include blood and urine. Orders appropriate ancillary services, such as radiographs, electrocardiograms (EKGs), and other procedures. 4. Provides counseling and teaching services to individuals, families, and/or groups. Identifies and discusses health prevention, such as immunizations, breast and testicular exams, and family planning. Discusses health maintenance, diet and exercise. Discusses health restoration from acute/minor and chronic conditions, and health protection, such as use of seat belts and helmets. 5. Prepares written or computerized, complete, accurate documentation on all patients evaluated in the clinical setting. Documents patient health care files and appropriate forms as designated by the medical treatment facility (MTF). Incorporates appropriate information to include subjective, objective data, and assessment plan (SOAP), based on patient needs and health care status. 6. Provides treatment of minor/acute and chronic conditions through use of a variety of therapeutic modalities. Manages patient treatment using a variety of therapeutic modalities to include medications, counseling, support services, and other ancillary medical supplies: crutches, splits, bandages, and syringes. Performs a variety of procedures as needed, such as skin biopsies, cryotherapy, and toenail removal, based on skill level/scope of practice of clinic. Manages chronic health problems in accordance with existing protocol. 7. Prescribes a variety of medications to patients in an outpatient clinic, based on MTF policy. Demonstrates knowledge of drug action, interactions, and idiosyncratic reactions. Prescribes formulary approved drugs. Provides counseling/instruction on use, application, side effects, and adverse reactions of medication. Performs routine histories and physicals. Provides well-baby care. Provides routine prenatal and post-partum care. Conducts routine histories and physicals on children and adults to include annual, sports, school, and occupational exams. Provides preventative health care measures across the lifespan, including laboratory tests, cholesterol checks, and immunizations. Determines which treatments are within the scope of his/her professional abilities, according to existing protocols, making appropriate referrals and consultation as necessary to a variety of multidisciplinary services. Recognizes non-routine medical or emergent conditions and implements immediate consultation and/or referral to the appropriate level of care. Consults and/or refers patients other ancillary health care providers for restoration and maintenance of health, to include dietician, physical therapist, and community support services. Assists in the training of staff and students. Provide professional guidance to hospital corpsman in the performance of their clinic professional duties in the family health care setting. Work closely with nurses and provide technical direction upon request. Assist in the training of medical and nursing students through established partnerships with local civilian universities. May be required to act as the Primary Care Service Chief. This includes serving as liaison between the Department Head/Clinical Manager and the medical staff in Primary Care and providing input on periodic performance evaluations if required. May be assigned additional duties as needed that include but are not limited to command committees and conferences. Performs other duties as assigned.
