Department Description
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital provides extraordinary high-level
care for children who require continuous monitoring. The unit has 20
beds for infants and children suffering from a variety of conditions or
recovering from surgery. More than 1,000 children per year are admitted
into the intensive care units at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital
arriving via ambulance, helicopter and airplane from throughout the
western United States.
The Pediatric Transitional Care Unit (TCUP)
is a 16-bed unit for infants and children suffering from a variety of
conditions or recovering from surgery. The TCU provides care to patients
with a moderate to high complexity of disease such as those recovering
from solid organ transplantation, requiring non-invasive mechanical
ventilation including BIPAP, CPAP, high flow nasal cannula, titration of
anticoagulant therapy, and post-operative specialty surgery care (ENT,
neurosurgery).
Required Qualifications
Nurse Practitioner I
- Minimum of two (2) years of recent experience working as an RN in a Pediatric ICU or Pediatric Acute Care setting. Applicants without PICU RN experience will be trained to cover Transitional Care only
- Master’s Degree in Nursing with an Acute Care pediatric nurse practitioner specialization
- Minimum of six (6) months PICU or Pediatric Acute Care NP experience. NPs without PICU experience will be trained to cover TCUP only
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of three (3) years experience working as an AC-PNP in a level III PICU
License/Certification
- California Driver’s license (CDL) if required for position.
- Current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work

- Current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California.
- Complete a BRN recognized graduate master’s degree program as a Nurse Practitioner.
- Obtain an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
- Submit enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day. CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments.
- Current AHA BLS as minimum requirement.
- Current AHA PALS as minimum requirement.
- State regulation requires that you have a supervising physician to practice.
- Incumbents with less than 6 months of NP experience will be hired as a Nurse Practitioner 1.
UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
