Job Description

1. Receives and reviews requests from physicians and other health care providers for CT examinations of patients. Determines the condition(s) at issue and the procedures and equipment necessary to best meet the needs of the individual case. Receives and positions patient for examinations. Explains procedures and actions to allay fears and secure maximum cooperation. Retrieves lab results and calculates glomerular filtration rate to ensure patients meet criteria for iodinated contrast media. Notifies radiologist if further consent must be obtained for patients with reduced renal function. Conducts research on implants and devices to ensure safety of patients undergoing CT procedures. Selects, sets up, adjusts and operates the CT equipment on either the 16 row or the 64 row MDCT suites. Conducts examinations, adjusting technique and equipment to best present the medically significant aspects found if unanticipated conditions or anomalies are discovered, extends and modifies procedure to insure full and accurate information as to findings and patient condition. Observes and reports patient responses to instructions, movement, touch, etc., if significant. Monitors patient condition during examination and, if necessary, renders emergency aid and summons assistance. Assists radiologist or physician in reading or evaluating results. Independently performs complex computerized 3D and reformats of the head and or body. Receives patients, reviews patients questionnaire, explains method of procedure and produces images necessary for the examination requested. Performs CT imaging of the head, spines, extremities, bodies, to include biopsies, and drainages. Receives patients, explains methods and safety precautions of procedures, starts IVs when needed, positions patient and produces necessary images for the requested examination. Assists in the triage of scheduling patients. CT scanning involves the following; independently establishing various parameters, MA, KVP, matrix, field of view (FOV), filters, window, width, cardiac gating, tumor localization, slice thickness, pitch, slice gapping, reformat angle, protocol, contrast, and edge enhancements to provide physicians with information required to complete a diagnosis. Uses the scout to accurately provide an auto technique for patient size and area of interest. Is able to identify artifacts, its causes and how to alter and minimize its effects on the final image. Confers with the radiologist to establish the requirement for non-standard examinations. Produces hard copy images by applying the correct window/width levels via a CD burner or laser camera. Notifies the radiologist(s) or physicians(s) of significant scans requiring immediate attention and visualization while patient is undergoing examination. Initiates suggestions, to the radiologist, to establish imaging parameters best suited for demonstrating specific pathology for the more difficult examinations. Oversees the use of various emergency equipment such as cardiac defibrillators, oxygen, suction and CO2 gas. 2. Trains radiologists, physicians, 68P students and other personnel in CT principles, procedures, capabilities, techniques, and equipment. Explains concepts and principles of the methodology and its use and limitations as a diagnostic tool. Develops CT imaging training plans for incorporation in other programs of instructions. Conducts hands-on training and technical oversight of other techniques in CT imaging. Performs operator level maintenance and care of equipment. Identifies need for and initiates action to obtain higher level support. Prepares and replaces imaging material such as film packs and CDs. Establishes and maintains a variety of files and records relating to CT activities and functions. Prepares reports on examinations, equipment status and utilization, workload, supply status and consumption, and related matters. Technologist ensures all paperwork correlating to the patient is reviewed for accuracy. Fills in each block from the protocol sheet that is needed to include allergies, medications and medical problems. Performs other duties as assigned.
